Mission and Outreach

School Supply Drive, August 1-15, 2010: Each year children start school without needed supplies. This year LPC, through the Outreach Committee, is reaching out to help Mary Bramlett Elementary School. Boxes will be placed in the narthex and at the E. Jeffries Street entrance. The following is a list of needed items: 24 pack crayons, washable markers, protractors, scissors, glue sticks, #2 pencils, highlighters, notebook paper, rulers, graph paper, composition books, colored pencils, 1 1/2- or 3-inch binders, 3 prong & 2 pocket folders.

Gaffney Soup Kitchen: The Outreach committee is seeking volunteers for the next meal to be served on August 28. We would like for groups to consider volunteering, such as families, circles, study groups, Sunday School classes, the choir, men;"s group, etc. An experienced soup kitchen worker will always be present to guide those who may not have served in this capacity before. A sign up sheet has been placed on the bulletin board with the dates for serving for the next 12 months. Christmas Day is our date in December-what an opportunity to create some very special holiday memories! Please consider this worthy gift of your time. If you have any questions or suggestions, contact Janet Carroll or Nancy Fowler.

Sunday School Quarterly Offering: Every quarter, the offerings from the Sunday School classes will be given to different causes. This quarter the money is being given to Parents of Preschoolers Program. This program is a voluntary program that assists parents in helping their children start school ready to succeed by purchasing (or donating) children"s books to the school district"s preschool literacy program. Many homes are without books that are appropriate and that instill an early love of reading and being read to. Children who have never been exposed to reading come to school at a huge disadvantage. Also, if anyone has books that their children or grandchildren may have outgrown and would like to donate such to the preschool program, they would be greatly appreciated. Contact Nancy Fowler if you have questions or need assistance in getting books to the church.

Community Garden: In April 2010, LPC began a community garden with the purpose to provide a source of fresh vegetables for needy people in Cherokee County, as well as a sense of community within Limestone Presbyterian Church as we work together toward a common goal. The garden is located behind the gravel parking lot between LPC and Buford Street Methodist Church. Small groups of individuals are needed to be responsible for weeding and watering the garden for a week at a time during the summer. These groups may come from Sunday School classes, families, individuals, circles, the men"s group, the choir, the Session, committees, or children"s groups. A sign up sheet has been placed outside the church office, beginning with the week of May 2 and running through August 1, 2010. Contact Janet Carroll, Jeff Cavender, or Don Ross should you have any questions about our community garden.

Food Drive, July 11-18, 2010: Please help us collect cans of food for Peach Center Ministries. Cans of tuna, chicken, peanut butter, and other nutritious items will be especially helpful. There will be several baskets placed in the church during these dates. Thank you for thinking of others.

Souper Bowl Sunday: February 7, 2010. Our youth held soup pots at the church doors after morning worship, and joined young people across the county to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting. In 2009, over 13,000 groups participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring generating over $10 million. All of the money collected is donated to a charity selected by the participant. None of the money is sent to the Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters. Organizers only ask that each participant report their collection so national totals can be determined and announced. Since the Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990, more than $60 million has gone to help people in need. This year, the youth collected $666.80 that was sent to the Peach Center and will help families right here in Gaffney. Thank you for your support!
